Chilton gets first 2008 feature win at Ponderosa

April 24, 2008

Michael Chilton of Salvisa picked up his first feature victory of the 2008 season Friday, winning the Good Neighbor Pharmacy Super Late Model main event at Ponderosa Speedway.

Three other racers made their way to victory lane in feature events at the Jucntion City track with P. J. Feistritzer of Danville making it two straight wins in the Kentucky National Guard Pro Late Model division, Josh Lucas of Bardstown winning the Hardee's Modified main event and Gerald Haynes Jr. scoring the win in the SkyTower Power Race Engines Sportsman feature.

Chilton took the lead off of turn two of the Good Neighbor Pharmacy Super Late Model feature, slipping around Aaron Hatton. Chilton opened a slight lead, while Hatton and Bobby Wolter Jr. battled for second and Dustin Neat and Dustin Linville raced for fourth. Neat claimed the fourth spot from Linville on lap 4, while Chilton began to work slower traffic. Meanwhile, the driver on the move was P. J. Feistritzer, making his way from his 10th starting position to pass Neat for fifth on lap 8.

Caution slowed the pace on lap 10 when Matthew Rigdon spun out in turn two. The restart was also called back when 9th-place running Brandon Fouts spun his mount in turn three while Jeff Watson pulled pitside with a flat right rear tire during the caution. Rigdon spun again on the third attempted lap 10 restart, rolling pitside for the evening.

Back under way, Chilton got some heat from Hatton, with Wolter Jr. all over Hatton for second and Feistritzer going to fourth past Linville on lap 12. With Chilton methodically pulling away from the pack, Hatton and Wolter Jr. resumed their spirited battle for second, with Feistritzer making it a three-way battle by lap 15. After a lap 16 caution and restart, Neat and Linville slid past Feistritzer off of turn two, while Wolter Jr. and Hatton turned the wick up on their battle for second. Hatton and Wolter Jr. battled door-to-door for second before Wolter Jr. slipped by for the runner-up slot on lap 23, but it was Chilton taking the checkered flag. Neat and Linville finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

In the Kentucky National Guard Pro Late Model feature, P. J. Feistritzer took the lead from his father, Paul Feistritzer, on lap 13 and held off the Pro Late Model feature Hard Charger Todd Coffman to lay claim to his second straight feature win. Coffman finished as runner-up and Bryan Bernhardt slipped past Paul Feistritzer late in the going to take third. Kevin Hardin edged Dylan Preston at the checkered flag for the final spot in the top five.

Josh Lucas survived six caution flags and a late race charge from Kelly Warren and Timmy York to claim the Hardee's Modified feature victory. Lucas led all 20 laps and won a spirited battle over the final five laps, as Warren and York worked different lines behind Lucas in an entertaining battle for second. York took second from Warren in the late going and pressured Lucas for the win. York and Lucas were side-by-side exiting turn four coming to the checkered flag, with Lucas grabbing the victory by one-half car length. York was a close second, nipping Warren by a half-car length for the spot. Russ Gabbert and Kevin Nesselhauf completed the top five.

Gerald Haynes Jr. inherited the lead of the SkyTower Power Race Engines Sportsman feature on lap 8 when leader Rick King pulled pitside with mechanical problems. King's exit put Haynes on the point and he led the rest of the way to earn the win. Logan Whitis ran second behind King, Troy Scott finished third, Daroyl Samples was fourth and C. W. Murphy was fifth.
