Boyle comes out on top on courts

April 24, 2008|Nancy Leedy

The Lincoln County High School tennis teams came up short on the courts at Boyle County, falling to the host Rebels in both girls and boys action.

Lincoln's girls swept the first three matches in singles to go up 3-0 over Boyle. Haley Hart, Brittany Gooch and Kylene Williams each collected a victory, but the Lady Rebels came back to win the rest of the day's matches to beat the Lady Patriots 6-3.

The Rebels scored a more lopsided victory over the Patriots, downing Lincoln 8-1. Lincoln's number four seed Lucas Harris was the lone victor for the Patriot boys, defeating Boyle's Jordan Shewmaker 6-0.

In the girls' match, Hart blanked Marissa Brown 8-0 at one, Gooch won 8-4 over Kelsey Smith of Boyle at two and Williams beat Katie Stephens 8-3 at three.

After Lincoln dropped the three through six seed matches, Gooch and Williams were looking to get the Lady Pats back on the winning track in doubles. The Lincoln duo put up a tough fight in the match before Boyle's Kelsey Stillwell and Brittany Maynard claimed the 8-4 win.

"Haley (Hart) got another win, Brittany (Gooch) and Kylene (Williams) both won in singles and played well together in doubles and Lucas (Harris) won his match. We didn't get the win, but we did play some good matches," said Lincoln coach David Horseman.

The Boyle boys had the match in hand by the end of singles play, going up 5-1 on Lincoln.

Chase Padgett, Lincoln's number one singles player, did hold the lead in his match with Boyle's David Theaker, but Theaker battled from behind to get the Rebels on a roll, winning 8-4.

Padgett became embroiled in an even closer match when doubles' action got under way. Padgett and his partner Lucas McCoy took on Boyle's Josh Cope and Shewmaker at the one seed and it was a fight to the finish with Cope and Shewmaker squeaking out the 9-8 win.

"We had some close matches," said Horseman. "We're a young team and we're still learning, but I think we're learning quickly."

Lincoln dropped matches to two teams from Boyle County recently.

Hart notched the lone Lincoln win in a 4-1 loss at Danville, topping Lady Admiral Rachel Ricker 6-0 at the one seed in singles.

The Lady Patriots were shut out 6-0 in three of the four remaining matches. The exception came at the one seed in doubles where Gooch and Williams got one game in a 6-1 loss to Danville's McKay Nelson and Magdalena Polinedrio.
