Government needs your votes, your taxes and your prayers. So, local officials, pastors and residents will gather at the Clark County Courthouse on Thursday to participate in the National Day of Prayer - a chance for communities to offer prayers for government leaders.

"All the local officials are welcome to join us," said Dan Brothers, youth minister for Grace Baptist Church and the event's organizer. "It's not just something we are doing here in Kentucky, it is something that is happening nationally."

The event will kick off at noon with a posting of the colors by the George Rogers Clark High School ROTC and a pledge to the flag. Several pastors from various local churches are scheduled to give brief talks on the importance of praying for government leaders, and the event will culminate with a group prayer and a closing song, "God Bless America." Organizers expect the event to last less than an hour.

According to the National Day of Prayer Task Force, tens of thousands of prayer events will take place across the county at the same time. The U.S. Congress established the National Day of Prayer in 1952, encouraging Americans to publicly worship and pray for the country's local and national leaders, according to the task force.

Brothers said that in years past, the event has drawn between 175 and 200 people.
