East Jessamine steamrolls Lincoln

May 08, 2008|Nancy Leedy

It was a long day on the diamond for Lincoln County last Thursday, one the Lady Patriots might just as soon forget.

Lincoln's defense committed a dozen errors and the offense strung together just five hits as the visiting East Jessamine Lady Jaguars cruised 20-4 in five innings.

"Except for the hits, which I thought wasn't too bad, it was terrible," said Lincoln coach Renita Leffew. "I'm not a negative person, but we didn't play well. We weren't playing with any motivation tonight. The whole 10 people that played — they were just going through the motions."

"I made one mistake myself tonight when I didn't know how many outs there were, but each person just made too many errors," she said.

East Jessamine (16-4) scored six runs in the top of the first inning, but Lincoln's Morgan Brown, Ashton Gooch and Alexis Gooch each scored in the bottom of the inning to keep the game close at 6-3.

Close went out the window in the third inning, though, as the Lady Jaguars batted around, scoring nine runs for a 15-3 lead.

The 10-run mercy rule was enforced in the bottom of the fifth. East Jessamine had further cushioned its lead before the game was called, scoring one run in the fourth and four more in the fifth.

Rebecca Patterson scored Lincoln's only other run in the game in the fourth off a Brown double.

"I just hate that we have to play like this at home," said Leffew. "You hear that the radio is here and you have the fans. You would think they'd be more appreciative and that they would play harder, but that wasn't the case today."

Allison Searcy picked up the win for East Jessamine, giving up four runs off five hits, with four strikeouts and four walks.

Ashton Gooch also pitched a complete game, giving up the 20 runs off nine hits. She gave up eight walks and struck out one.
