WYBL officially opens season

The Winchester Youth Baseball League opening day was delayed a week because of rain, but got off to a flying start last weekend.

The T-Ball players opened the season with three games. Later in the day, a group of T-Ball All-Stars played the 7-8 coach pitch Red Sox in a full slate of games at the park.

Minor League

The Winchester Cardinals played the Paris Defenders in their first home game and suffered an 11-6 loss.

J.C. Cornelius, Tyler Chism and Chris Ladd of the Cardinals combined to pitch for the Cards in which the Defenders jumped out to an 11-1 lead.

The Cardinals fought back to make the game respectable.

Major League

Reds 13, Red Sox 1

The Winchester Reds played the Winchester Red Sox and came away with a 13-1 win.

Drew Blevins started and reliever Zack Roe combined for four strikeouts. Justin Maggard pitched the fourth and fifth innings, fanning six batters.

Jarrod Maggard came in to close out the game striking out the side. The four pitchers combined on a one-hitter.

The Reds scored four runs in the four innings and crossed the plate with four runs each in the last two innings.

Leading the way with three hits was Cornelius, followed by two hits each from Roe, Jarrod Maggard, Blevins and Drew Stone. In the last inning, Roe hit an inside-the-park home run, while Jarrod Maggard followed with a triple.

The Reds had 12 hits.

Red Sox 7, Paris 6

The Winchester Red Sox played their best game of the season and handed the Paris Cardinals a 7-6 loss.

Riley Caudill started the game and pitched three innings. Caudill struckout five and allowed just three runs. Brandon Jones came on in relief and fanned six batters in three innings of work.

Kyle Jones paced the offense with three hits, followed by Brandon Jones and Tyler Frazier with two each. Riley Caudill and Jake Robinson added one hit each.

Reds 3, Paris 1

The Winchester Reds withstood a late rally by the Paris Nationals who stranded players at second and third in the last inning to win 3-1.

Jarrod Maggard recorded his first win of the year while his brother Justin Maggard recorded the save.

The Reds (4-1) scored all their runs in the first inning. With two outs, Roe opened the scoring with a walk, then stole second and third, and scored on a pass ball. Then with the bases loaded, Drew Stone's hit plated Justin and Jarrod Maggard.

Roe and Cornelius made several key defensive plays, while Justin Maggard picked off a runner at first in the last inning.
