May 20, 2008|Fred Petke

Police had to physically restrain a Winchester man early Saturday morning after he allegedly sexually assaulted a woman and approached officers with a knife.

Garrett W. Callahan, 24, of 22 White Circle was eventually arrested on a number of charges, including first-degree rape, first-degree sodomy, first-degree unlawful imprisonment and first-degree wanton endangerment.

The victim, a female who lived nearby, called police at 6:32 a.m. Saturday and said she had been sexually assaulted. The woman said Callahan entered her residence and forced sexual intercourse and sodomy against her will. She said Callahan refused to stop when she said no several times. Callahan eventually left, but returned a short time later and tried to enter again without her permission.

When police arrived, Callahan reportedly came out of his residence brandishing a knife in a threatening manner, according to Winchester Police Detective James Hall's report. Callahan had cut himself and was physically restrained by officers before his arrest.
