Gladys Hammons: April 27, 1928 — May 19, 2008

Gladys Vest Hammons, 80, formerly of Frankfort, Ky. died Monday at St. Joseph Hospital after a brief illness.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert C. Hensley Sr. and son Robert C. Hensley Jr., her sisters Alene Conway, Anna Beckley, Tessie Hall and brother William Vest Jr.

Gladys loved her high school years at Bald Knob where she enjoyed theatre, volleyball, and being the Society Editor of "The Knob Knocker." She also attended Eastern Kentucky University.

Survivors include her beloved sister Myrtle Vest Rechenbach of Frankfort, one son Patrick R. and wife Brenda Yewell of Lexington, four daughters, Debra A. Hensley of Lexington, Robin Hammons Dolger of England, Elaine "Cindy" Haralson of Texas and Susan Rand. Four nephews, the Rev. Russell R. Rechenbach II of Richmond, Charles Edward Hall of New York, Tom and wife Judy Hall of Lexington, Walter and wife Judy Conway of Frankfort and two nieces, Bobbye J. Atha of Jensen Beach, Fla. and Charlene Manuel and husband Richard of Frankfort. Grandchildren, Ashley Danielle Rechenbach, Hallie Celeste Xiaoying Hensley, John S. Malloy, Erich Keegan and wife Cara Frank, and Madeline Yewell, and great-granddaughter, Trinity Rechenbach.

Gladys was very fond of the many friends she made at Capitol House in Frankfort, Rose Terrace in Nicholasville and Northpoint Lexington Health Care Center, Sandy Silver of Harrodsburg and the many friends she made with the Franklin County Comprehensive Care Center and Billie Morrison with whom she went to high school.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to NAMI Lexington, 498 Georgetown St. Suite 201, Lexington, KY 40508 or to Disabled American Veterans.

Visitation was 9 a.m. and the funeral service was at 11 am at Rogers Funeral Home, 507 W. 2nd St. in Frankfort Thursday. Burial will follow at the Frankfort Cemetery.

Bearers were the Rev. Russell R. Rechenbach II, Patrick Yewell, John S. Malloy, Erich Keegan Frank, Charlene Manuel, Bobbye J. Atha, Patrick Yewell and Walter Conway.
