Teen volunteer program offered

Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center can help teens decide if a career in health care may be for them. The medical center's auxiliary is inviting teens to spend some of their free time this summer as a teen volunteer.

Participation in the Teen Volunteer Program is open to teens age 14 through their senior year in high school. The program will begin June 23 and continue through early August. Volunteers must attend a three-hour orientation session before the program begins. Interested teens must register by May 30 by calling Theresa Conder at (859) 239-1231.

Cancer event scheduled

McKINNEY - The Lincoln County Cancer Coalition will host a free dessert and informational event at Green River Pentecostal Church. The event will be 5:30-6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the fellowship hall across from the church. The event is free and will include free dessert samples and free screenings related to body fat analysis, dermascan facial screening, blood pressure and oxygen saturation. To register, call the Lincoln County Health Department at (606) 365-3106.

Lecture series announced

PERRYVILLE - The Perryville Battlefield Preservation Association, a nonprofit organization charged with preserving and interpreting Kentucky's largest Civil War battleground, recently announced the schedule for the third season of the General Lovell H. Rousseau Civil War Lecture Series for 2008.

Noted speakers from the region and state will speak on a variety of Civil War-related topics. The lectures will be on the second Thursday of each month from June to September at the Boyle County Public Library. Each event starts at 6:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Speakers include Ron Bryant, "The Lost Cause and Neo-Confederate Images in Kentucky," June 12; Chris Kolakowski, "The Battle of Stones River," July 10; Phillip Seyfrit, "Leaders at the Battle of Richmond," Aug. 7; and Don Rightmyer, "Finding Your Civil War Ancestor," Sept. 11.

Walk-It-Off winners announced

Winners of weekly prizes for the spring 2008 Walk-It-Off program can stop by the Boyle County Extension office, 99 Corporate Drive, to pick up their prizes.

Winners include Brooke Smith, one-month membership to Bunny Davis Center; Bobby Tucker, one-month membership to Bunny Davis Center; Julienne Readnour, University of Kentucky lunch tote; Sherry James, $20; Charlie Neal, $20; Laura Brooks, UK tote bag; Jackie Wilder, UK water bottles; and Jessica Stevens, UK lunch tote.
