The winner of "American Idol" Season 7 may have already been crowned, but Winchester residents won't have to wait until next year to get their "Idol" fix, thanks to a local talent competition modeled after the popular show.

The event, Winchester SuperStar, begins with auditions on Friday, June 6 at 7 p.m. on Main Street. Singers of all ages are encouraged to participate in the show. Contestants will be divided into one of four categories, based on age. A winner will be selected from each category as well as an overall winner. Cash prizes are available.

The competition will last for six weeks, June 6, June 13, June 20, July 11, July 18 and the finals will be July 25. Winners will be decided by official judges and fan votes. For the first night's competition, voting will only be allowed on official forms available at the show. For the other rounds, voting can be done by visiting www.winchestersun.com or by casting ballots, which will be available in the paper.

"It's our version, basically of รข??American Idol.' You get to follow them (contest participants)all summer," said Lara Thornbury, who is helping to organize the event through Winchester First, a group devoted to revitalizing downtown.

The event will allow singers of all ages from throughout central Kentucky to put their talents on display and put themselves in the running for prizes, including paid travel expenses so the winner of the 16-28 category can attend the next round of "American Idol" auditions.

"It's a lot of fun. It's one of my favorite events," said Thornbury.

Businesses and restaurants on Main Street are encouraged to have extended hours during performance nights and vendors will sell food, crafts and novelties. Concert viewers can sit on the steps across from the courthouse.

Anyone interested in participating should send a completed entry form to Winchester SuperStar, c/o Winchester First, P.O. Box 40, Winchester, KY 40392.

Forms can be picked up at City Hall and the Winchester Sun office.
