Emily Louise Payne Burns, 60, wife of J. Michael Burns, of Nicholasville, died Wednesday, May 21, after a battle with cancer.

She was secretary and treasurer of JMBA, Inc., and the president and founder of Burns Realty Brokerage. A native of Hazard, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Minor Bransford Payne and Mary Kay Crain Payne. She was a graduate of Patricia Stevens College, Tampa, Fla., a member of St. Luke Catholic Church, the Lexington Board of Realtors, Lexington Homebuilders Association and past-president of the Lexington Chapter of Parents of Murdered Children.

A son, Michael Bransford Burns preceded her in death. In addition to her husband, she is survived by: a son, Andrew Tobin and wife Tana Burns of Richmond, granddaughter: Sarah Grace Burns, sisters: Mary Boyd Payne and husband Larry Huffman and Elizabeth Payne and husband Howard Edward Chappell, both of Lexington and Kay Payne and husband Terry Anderson of Sharpsburg, Ky., sisters-in-law: Kathy and Claire Burns, of Houston, Texas and nine nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 27, at Cathedral of Christ the King by clergy Bishop Ronald W. Gainer, the Rev. William Bush and the Rev. Patrick Fitzsimons with interment in Calvary Cemetery. Serving as casket bearers are Jack Davis, Billy Burns, Ryan Anderson, Josh Huffman, Payne Huffman and Hogan Chappell.

Friends called from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, May 26, at St. Luke Catholic Church where a Vigil Prayer service was held at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Emily Burns Memorial Chalice Fund c/o St. Luke Church, 304 South Main Street, Nicholasville, KY 40356.
