Softball: Boyle's run ends with loss to Pulaski

May 30, 2008|HAL MORRIS

SOMERSET - The ending wasn't the way Boyle County wanted it.

But that still could not take away from the surprising season the Rebels had, even though it ended in an 8-3 loss to Pulaski County in a 12th Region Tournament semifinal Thursday night.

"We had a few little jitters there at the beginning. We hadn't practiced in the lights and played in the lights. I think that got us a little bit. We had trouble seeing the ball," Boyle coach Chris LeMonds said. "But nonetheless, I can't say how proud I am of them. For what they've done this year, I'm just proud of them."

Brittney McKee limited Boyle (22-15) to four hits and retired the side in four of the seven innings. Host Pulaski (29-8) took advantage of four Boyle errors to score four unearned runs.

Kendra Ross got Boyle on top first with a two-out solo home run to left field, but that was the Rebels' only lead. Pulaski answered with two runs on two hits with one Boyle error in the bottom of the first.

Morgan Pike reached on an error and scored when Lindsey Stephens' blooper fell in and the throw to third to get Pike got away from Emily Woolum to let Pike score. Stephens then scored on Katie Burton's single as the Maroons took a 2-0 lead.

Pulaski added a run in the second when Kayla Lorman made it to second when her fly ball was misplayed in center, went to third on a wild pitch and later scored on Kendra Hyden's ground out.

"I think those plays in the field kind of shook us up a bit. Plus, Pulaski's a good team. They're going to hit the ball. They're going to make adjustments and they're going to hit," LeMonds said.

Boyle came back to make it a 4-2 game when Emily Donlon walked, went to second on Kylee Talbott's sacrifice bunt and scored on Megan Sutton's infield single.

Fifth inning key for Pulaski

But Pulaski began to pull away in the bottom of the fifth.

Pike led off with a walk and Jessica Randolph doubled. Stephens singled home Pike, then Randolph scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-2. Stephens eventually scored on Brittney McKee's groundout. Burton walked and pinch-runner Chelsey Jordan scored on a single by Kristin Dowell

Boyle got a run back when Emily Woolum's triple to right field scored Hayley Hellyer, who had singled, to make it 8-3.

Cheyenne Brumbaugh took the loss, giving up all eight runs - but only four earned runs - in 4 1/3 innings. Lindsey Edwards worked the final 1 2/3 innings, giving up no runs and two hits.

Boyle loses just one senior off the team, Woolum, and Hellyer is team's only junior.

"A lot of teams probably didn't pick us to win a district game since we didn't win a district game last year. You go from winning five games (last year) to winning 22, it's a big accomplishment," LeMonds said. "It's got our program going in the right direction. They committed themselves to getting better."

Ross, a sophomore, knows next year can be even better.

"I thought we did pretty good. At the beginning of the season, we were struggling with some things but then we worked really hard at them and we got better. We could tell by the end of the season," she said. "Our goal was to get 20 wins. We got 22, so that's a pretty good season.

"I think next year we can make state, and go far at state."
