Danville boot camp begins today

A boot camp exercise program offered by McDowell Wellness Center begins today and will meet 5:30-6:30 a.m. each Monday, Wednesday and Friday for six weeks. The boot camp is a basic training class comprised of exercises that are used to train military personnel. To sign up or for more information, call (859) 936-9355 or stop by the member services desk.

Mercer road to close for project

HARRODSBURG - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Department of Highways, recently announced work to replace a culvert over Lyons Creek on Ky. 1987, Terrapin-Kirkwood Road, is scheduled to begin Wednesday.

The $157,432 project has been awarded to Todd Johnson Contracting Inc., and is anticipated to be complete by the end of July. To complete this work, Ky. 1987 will be closed for no more than 45 days. During this time, only local access will be maintained.

All work is scheduled on a tentative basis and is subject to change depending on weather conditions, emergencies and other factors beyond the control of the Department of Highways. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet asks motorists to be aware of the work zone and to utilize safe driving habits when traveling through the work area.

Brass band festival pre-market open

The Great American Brass Band Festival pre-market will be open 11:30 a.m.-4 p.m. through Thursday. It is located at Danville Office Equipment on Main Street. T-shirts, polos and other items will be available for advanced purchase. The festival market will relocate to the festival site on Friday.

Picnic tables for Saturday evening at The Great American Brass Band Festival still are available.

Tables that seat eight are $150.

Danville's Happy Paws receives grant

Happy Paws Spay/Neuter Clinic, operated by the Danville-Boyle County Humane Society, recently received a $9,975 grant to help subsidize 700 surgeries for low-income individuals over the next year.

Happy Paws, which opened in October 2007, has successfully altered more than 700 animals to date in an effort to proactively fight the area's dire pet overpopulation problem.

Happy Paws Spay/Neuter Clinic serves those members of the community that have low or fixed incomes or are on any type of public assistance. The 30-member staff is made up of two paid professionals and 28 volunteers. For information about the clinic or to make an appointment, call (859) 691-1137.

Testing at Danville High canceled

Due to schoolwide faculty professional development, summer reading tests for honors English classes at Danville High School are canceled Tuesday. Students may resume testing as usual on Thursday. Any students with emergency concerns may call Cassie Dickison at (859) 238-1308 ext. 1125.

Lincoln cruise-in, corn hole event planned

The second annual South Lincoln Memorial Community Center Cruise-in and Corn Hole Tournament will be Saturday. The cruise-in will begin at 3 p.m. with dash plaques given to the first 75 cruisers. Sign-ups for the corn hole tournament will be until 4:45 p.m. with the tournament beginning at 5 p.m. Teams are guaranteed two games in the double-elimination tournament. There is a $5 fee per team to play in the tournament. Music will be provided by Jayme Phillips, door prizes will be given and concessions will be sold. Proceeds will go to the community center.

Benefit supper for Lincoln Amish school set

CRAB ORCHARD - A benefit supper in the form of a pig roast for the Crab Orchard Amish School will be 5:30-8 p.m. Friday at Cedar Creek Sportsman Club on U.S. 150 between Stanford and Crab Orchard across from Cedar Creek Lake. Signs will be posted. Donations will be accepted for the meal.

Boyle Prettiest WoMan contest needs men
