Gallery Hop is Friday

June 10, 2008

The 9th Gallery Hop Stop, sponsored by The Arts Commission of Danville/Boyle County through a generous grant from Kentucky Utilities, is set for 5:30 9 p.m. Friday.

More than 70 local artists will display and sell their works in 23 downtown businesses or agencies that have volunteered to serve as "galleries" for the evening.

According to ACDBC Executive Director Ann Nichols, "This Hop is the most exciting of any organized by the Arts Commission. Not only will there be tempting treats at most all locations and a variety of art for every taste, too, but several Hop Stops will also feature musical entertainment."

From the Community Arts Center, which will be filled with work from the Centre College faculty as well as the Class of 2008 Centre Art Students, to the Goggans Warehouse's exhibit of woodcarving and metal sculpture, there is sure to be something for everyone, Nichols added. A combination of visual art offerings in acrylic, oil, pen and ink, pencil, watercolor, collage, photography, blown glass, stained glass, fused glass, lamp-work glass beads, pastel, ceramics, clay, decoupage, paper-mache, feathers, wood, metal and fiber is on tap.

Those looking for utilitarian objects will find hand-carved wood pens, baskets, hand-painted floor cloths, metal pot hangers and note cards. For the fashion-forward, hand-made jewelry will be for sale for enhancing your summer wardrobe.

Author/artist Robert Powell will be on hand, too, with his fiction and non-fiction books as well as pen-and-ink drawings. Great American Brass Band Festival poster artist Wayne Daugherty will sign his prints at the Community Arts Center during the Hop.

The route begins at Community Trust Bank, works its way up Main to Third, where West T. Hill Community Theatre offers a feast for the eyes and the ears. The trail then heads back down Main, with a dog-leg to Second and back up Main to end at the warehouse on Perryville Street.

Nichols said it's an interesting route, "one sure to please anyone looking for a good time, and a great way to begin a summer weekend."
