June 16, 2008

A Richmond woman died Sunday night after she pulled in front of a tractor-trailer and collided with it. Both vehicles burst into flames.

Kentucky State Police said Mary K. Vanwinkle, 32, was probably killed on impact and was pronounced dead at the scene on Kentucky 627 approximately three miles from Interstate 75.

Police said she was stopped on the shoulder of Kentucky 627 at a private driveway when she pulled onto the roadway and in front of an oncoming Kenworth, driven by Danny W. Gastineau of Stanford. The two vehicles exploded and were destroyed by the blaze.

Gastineau, who was wearing a seat belt, escaped without injury. The crash was reported at 9:15 p.m. Sunday, and the road remained closed for several hours while police investigated the crash and Emergency Management officials cleaned up a fuel spill.
