The Lexington Lions Club Bluegrass Fair has added two new pageants to its lineup for 2008, with all pageant events in the organization's new pavilion. The Miss Bluegrass Fair and Miss Teen Bluegrass Fair pageants will be on opening night, Thursday, July 10. The added Miss Pre-Teen Bluegrass Fair and Ms. Bluegrass Fair pageants will be Tuesday, July 15.

"Although the Bluegrass Fair has had very successful pageants over the last decade, we are really excited this year because of our new facility," said Pageant Coordinator Sue Alexander. "It will be the first time we have had a permanent stage and good dressing rooms. There have been years in the past when our contestants have had to brave the rain to get from the dressing rooms to the stage."

The new building also has made it possible for the fair to add these two new events. The Miss Pre-Teen pageants have been very popular in recent years with the advent of the Kentucky Miss Pre-Teen County Fair pageant that takes place in Louisville in the fall. Because of space and time constraints, the Bluegrass Fair has not been able to offer this pageant until this year.

The second offering is the Ms. Bluegrass Fair pageant.

"We believe there is interest among young women who have aged out of the county fair pageant circuit who still like to compete, even though there is no opportunity for further advancement," Alexander said. "This is why we have added this pageant."

The Ms. Bluegrass Fair pageant is open to women 22 to 35, single or married. They can even have children. They will compete in sportswear and evening gown, and instead of a personal interview or questions from the stage, they will be asked to prepare in advance a 30- to 60-second commercial for their favorite product, service or charitable organization.

Contestants for Miss Pre-Teen Bluegrass Fair must be between the ages of 8 and 12 and be full-time students in an accredited school system in Kentucky. They will participate in an individual interview and make an on-stage appearance.

Contestants for Miss Bluegrass Fair must be between the ages of 16 and 21, and never married. They will compete in swimsuit and formal wear with individual interviews being held in the afternoon at the Fayette County Extension Office. Contestants for Miss Teen Bluegrass Fair must be between the ages of 13 and 15 and be fulltime students in an accredited school system in Kentucky. They will participate in an individual interview and make an on-stage appearance.

All pageants are open to girls and young women from any county in Kentucky. Winners in the Miss, Teen and Pre-Teen categories will represent the Lexington Lions Club Bluegrass Fair in the appropriate statewide events conducted by the Kentucky Association of Fairs and Horse Shows.
