Claus produces documentary for KET

As a project for a media class, senior Lauren Claus produced a film documentary for Kentucky Educational Television (KET), highlighting Kelley Family Farms in Lexington.

Claus' story aired Saturday, June 28 on KET1 and Sunday, June 29 on KET2.

KET, Kentucky's statewide public broadcasting network, contacted professor Doug Smart to see if any students were interested in contributing a piece to Kentucky Life.

"I jumped at the chance," said Claus, from Toms River, N.J. "Since I am more interested in television production than I am in movie making."

Initially, Claus intended to highlight the corn maze the family grew in the fall.

But after the first interview, she learned that fall 2008 was the first year for the maze.

Before, the family grew tobacco, but because of the falling prices, they expanded to include strawberries, pumpkins and a corn maze.

"I heard about the maze through a Facebook group actually," Claus said. "I did some research and thought it would be a fun thing to do a documentary about Kelley Family Farms. KET agreed that it was a good idea, and gave me the go ahead. Only when I got there and learned about the tobacco issue did I realize that I had a really solid story."

This class is designed to familiarize students with cameras, lighting and pre-production. Claus learned this, but also gained hands-on experience working with a client and learning how to tell a factual story.

"My experience in the media communications department at Asbury College has taught me to always learn from everything and everyone you can, always ask questions, and have a passion for what you do," she said.
