Religion briefs for June 26

Breaux to speak at Southland

Throughout the Bible, we see various stories and conversations that may be hard to understand and believe on the surface. That's what faith is all about. Often when we read what God calls people to become and do it seems impossible. In Southland Christian Church's next message series, former senior minister Mike Breaux will help us look at three of Jesus' sayings that evoke the question "Seriously?" As we unpack these statements we will explore what it means to live in our culture with our minds focused on the Kingdom of God.

On June 28 and 29, we will consider Jesus' words in Matthew 5:29: If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. What if we took Jesus' command to gouge out our eye "seriously?" Most of us would be walking around in darkness because our eyes take us into so many places that can lead to bad decisions.

On July 5 and 6, we'll look at John 6:54 where Jesus said, Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life. The phrase "eat my flesh" has caused many theological debates over the centuries, but the words have a deep significance for those who know Jesus as Lord.

On July 12 and 13, we'll take a closer look at Luke 14:26 when Jesus said, If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters, yes, even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. The phrase "hate my mother" sounds like it needs to be spoken in a counselor's office, yet Jesus had a reason for this command. Southland's service times are 5:30 p.m., Saturdays; 8:30, 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m., and 6:08 p.m., Sundays.
