Theatre camp draws solid reviews

July 02, 2008|Hannah Ferguson

Mix the sounds of little voices rising and falling, the musty smell of the backstage of an old theatre and add odd costumes as strange decorations hanging on racks and thrown on the floor ... and there you have the few minutes before the Wilmore Theatre's Summer Camp performance.

The students met from June 23-28 and used every afternoon to prepare for their final show, "Just So."

The 25-minute piece was written by Rudyard Kipling (author of The Jungle Book). Melanie Johnson decided to head up the Theatre camp with the help of Sasha Weddington when they met two years ago. Johnson is the East Jessamine High School drama coach, and Weddington is the East Middle School drama teacher. They work through the Parks and Recreation department.

"We plan to have a Christmas show, where the Parks and Recreation will sponsor us again," said Johnson.

According to Johnson, the kids rehearsed every day in the morning and afternoon.

"We even let our kids help to design their own costumes," said Weddington, while putting the finishing touches on a little girls' makeup. There was also a special day where Weddington and Johnson taught the children how to do scar and bruise makeup. There was evidence of this on the walls where they had posted their "Wall of Fame" with photos of the weeks happenings.

The children performed on Friday, June 28 both in character and in presence

The theatre troupe is still taking applications for its middle school and high school camp coming up. It will run from July 7-11 and it is for sixth through 12th grade students.
