Infant's death begs review of bed safety

July 10, 2008|Christina Miller

A 3-week-old was found unresponsive last week in Lincoln County after sleeping in the same bed as his baby sitter.

Before laying your infant down to sleep, consider the following list of precautions.

â?¢ Have your infant sleep in a separate but nearby crib or bassinet in the parents' bedroom for at least the first six months.

â?¢ Put your baby to sleep on his back for naps and at night.

â?¢ Infants under 12 months of age should not be put to sleep in a crib with soft bedding.

â?¢ Do not put thick blankets, comforters, pillows and large stuffed toys in the baby's crib.

â?¢ If you use a thin blanket, tuck it around the crib mattress, reaching only as far as the baby's chest.

â?¢ Do not use bumper pads in your child's crib.

â?¢ Do not use plastic mattress pads.

â?¢ Do not put your child to rest or sleep on a waterbed.

â?¢ If you do allow your baby to sleep in your bed, make sure the mattress is firm and flat, with snug-fitting bedding.

â?¢ Make sure your partner is aware that the baby is in the bed.

â?¢ Do not allow pets or other children to share the bed with the baby.

No foul play is suspected in the death of Tyler Lee Young, according to Kentucky State Police.

The child was at a baby sitter's residence on Ky. 39 south of Crab Orchard when he was discovered unresponsive about 8 a.m., police said.

The boy's mother is Savannah Wilder of Stanford, police said.

Emergency personnel responded to the residence, about five miles south of Crab Orchard, and could not find vital signs when examining the infant. Lincoln County Coroner Bill Demrow pronounced the child deceased at 9:20 a.m.

Demrow said the incident could be ruled as accidental. It is not confirmed whether the infant died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or a "roll over situation," Demrow said.

The death is being investigated by Demrow, the Kentucky Medical Examiner's Office and state police.

Graveside services were yesterday.
