Dr. Perry Jonathan Ashley, of West Columbia, S.C., died Monday, July 7 from lung cancer.
He was born May 1, 1928, to the late Terrell G. and Ola Whitmer Ashley. He was an Army veteran, a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of the University of South Carolina in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications, a teacher and scholar of the history of American journalism, had edited the five volumes of the Dictionary of Literary Biography, a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, the Society of Professional Journalists, and the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications, and was chairman of Richland County School District 2 Board of Trustees and the East Richland Public Service District.
Survivors his wife, Lita C. Ashley of West Columbia, S.C.; sons, Jonathan (Jan) and Richard (Allison); grandchildren, David, Joanna, Christopher, Rachel, and Anna; a great grandson, Noah; sisters, Eunice Pence and Hulah Snow of Stanford; and a brother, Carl Ashley.
