Donations being sought for AAU Junior Olympics

July 22, 2008

Three Danville track team members - Diamond Pace, Michael Ross and Candice Taylor - will compete in the AAU Junior Olympics in Detroit next week and Danville track coach Sadie Gambrel is hoping donations will help offset part of the trip's cost.

The group leaves Sunday and will be gone five days.

"I am looking to raise at least $500 to help with the cost of motel fees, registration and gas. I would greatly appreciate any help," Gambrel said. "These kids will be competing against kids from all over the United States. These kids I am taking have not only excelled on the track, but also in society and school.

"Pace will try to defend her national championship (triple jump) title while Ross and Taylor will be going to see if they can obtain a championship title. The competition is going to be tough, but one that will teach our kids that this is just like the Olympics - you run against everyone."

Pace also won the Class A triple jump championship in May.

Taylor qualified for the national competition by winning the long jump while Ross was fourth in the triple jump.

Donations can be sent to Gambrel at 408 W. Walnut St., Danville, 40422 or by calling her at (859) 936-7502, extension 3672.
