Gift shop opens in Wilmore

July 23, 2008|Hannah Ferguson

The tinkling of well-tempered chimes and the smell of homemade soaps, greet customers as they enter The Front Room, a shop owned by Linda Goepper. The tiny shop is titled appropriately, as it's setup in the front room of Goepper's house on Main Street in Wilmore.

Goepper was inspired to originally sell mostly antiques and art but according to her, antiques just aren't doing well in the market with the way the economy has been lately.

"I'm new at this," she said. "I'm just learning what the customers like. I try to get things that I love and hope that customers love it too."

Goepper had to diversify into more of a gift shop when she realized that antiques just weren't doing so well for profit.

"I try for things that fit the town of Wilmore," she said.

Her favorite item is the Woodstock Chimes. These featured chimes are tuned to classic songs. One chime is tuned to the first four notes of "Amazing Grace," while another hits the high notes of "Pacabel's Canon."

Besides featuring homemade soaps from local vendors in town and hand-sewn baby towels, Goepper is still trying to expand and looking for more opportunities everyday.

She spends most of her days waiting on customers and being friendly with her dog Zuzu, who everyone knows as the "shop dog."
