Local Christian musicians give their summer camps for kids

August 08, 2008

Five Winchester musicians spent eight weeks this summer working for LifeWay Centri-Kid camps across the southeastern United States.

Chelsea Carpenter, Chris Carpenter, Caleb Crosby, Adam Littrell and Blake Still left Winchester in late May and have spent the summer as part of the camp staff. Hired to play worship music for the morning and evening daily camp sessions, the five also planned and led Bible study, led recreation activities and track times, and ministered to the approximately 3,000 students over the past eight weeks.

"It was a very eye opening experience as far as ministry goes," Chelsea Carpenter said. "God stretched me really far, and it took me out of my comfort zone because I had to work with kids, which is something that I'd never done before."

Part of a team of 22 staffers, the five began their summer at Lake Yale Conference Center in Leesburg, Fla. in early June and worked six week-long Centri-Kid camps and one weekend camp.

In addition to Lake Yale, other locations include Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla.; Shocco Springs Baptist Conference Center in Talladega, Ala.; Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn.; Austin College in Sherman, Texas; and Louisiana College in Pineville, La.

The five also spent a week in Dallas working inner city missions through Project Transformation. The group returned home Aug. 3.

The band includes Chris Carpenter as worship leader, Chelsea Carpenter on vocals and keyboard, Still on bass, Littrell on guitar and Crosby on drums.

Forty-nine Centri-Kid camps were held this summer at locations throughout the nation. It began in 1986 as an expansion of LifeWay's popular Centrifuge youth camps, which started in 1979. The Centri-Kid camps are for students who have completed third, fourth, fifth and sixth grades.
