Cool Rides: Perfect match -- Camaro has something for husband, wife

August 25, 2008|CLAY JACKSON

Scott and Kim Lanham both grew up around classic cars. Scott's father had a Camaro, and Kim's had a variety of old cars which included Corvettes.

So, the Boyle County couple started saving for a car that both of them would like to have later. She wanted a convertible, and he wanted a 1969 Camaro. Neither wanted a project that would sit in a garage and never get finished.

Although they looked around, they could never find a 1969.

Finally, Scott found a 1968 Rally Sport Camaro convertible on a Web site and decided to take a trip to Minnesota to see if it was too good of a deal to pass up. He made sure the car's condition was perfect and e-mailed photos to Kim for her approval.

With her blessing, Scott was soon back on the road to Kentucky was a classic car on his trailer.

After driving all night to get back to Boyle County, Scott arrived just as his kids were on their way to school. Haleigh, 14, and Tori, 9, both got so excited about the car that they wanted to skip school and check it out, but that didn't happen.

Haleigh wants to drive the Camaro to school when she turns 16. That might not happen because of insurance reasons, but she's still trying. She goes with the family to car shows, including Stanford's Cruise-In, and sings at some of the events.

The classic car is original except for the tires. They still have the originals but put 17-inch American Racing tires. The car has factory air conditioning, AM/FM stereo and an automatic rag top.

The Rally Sport or RS has a package that included hidden headlights, revised taillights, RS badging, and exterior rocker trim. The engine is a 327 with a 295 hp. The transmission is automatic, which makes Kim happy because she's not a big fan of manual transmissions.
