The George Rogers Clark High School boys' soccer coach Greg Dyk was all smiles after his team posted a 1-0 shutout over Harrison County Thursday night at the Cardinal Soccer Complex.

"The score didn't show it, but that was the best we have played the ball and shaped our attack yet," he said. "We recognized when to go, when to take the air out and possess very well tonight."

Clark (3-2) scored the only goal on a free kick attempt when Mark Saporito connected on an assist to teammate Austin Vice with a header into the net nine minutes into the contest.

Dyk was pleased with the play of Reese Benson, who was the team's "link."

"He created everything for us and was solid in the midfield," Dyk said.

Dyk also singled out the play of Mason Kirk and Marquess Dawson.

"They played well up top and created some chances for Chris Heil," he said. "We just couldn't let them go, except the one that counted."

Kirk said the problem on offense was just a matter of finishing plays.

"We played well throughout the whole game, but we still need to finish more goals to put teams away," he said.

Clark had 14 shots on goal, while Clark goal keeper Blake Browning had one save.

In the junior varsity game, the Cards upped their record to 3-2 on the season with a 4-0 shutout over the Thorobreds.

Nathaniel Wells sparked Clark's offense with two goals, while Israel Arumbul and Ethan Taulbee added one each. Arumbul, Marc Ladanyi and Taulbee each had an assist.

Goal keeper Ben Harris scooped up four saves for the Cards.

"Overall, it was a good rebound from Tuesday night's game," Clark coach Patrick Fitzgerald said.

Next game: Madison Central at Clark, Tuesday, 7:30 p.m.
