"My composure was good, the line did a great job and the receivers ran the routes really hard," Grey said.
Grey finished 18-for-27, sitting out the final 15 minutes after developing cramps in the calf muscles in both legs.
"I thought Trae threw the ball very well and we caught the ball overall," Danville coach Sam Harp said. "We did some good things offensively, and we did some things not so well."
Danville rolled up 643 total yards, but its defense allowed Russell to make things interesting late in the game. The Lakers pulled within 38-31 with a touchdown with 8:55 to play but couldn't score again, but Harp said he knew the offense would be ahead of the defense as the season began.
'You can guarantee we're going to come with our hardest every week'
And the success of Grey and his array of receivers gives the Admirals a bona fide passing threat that Harp said could serve them well.
"I think it will down the road," Harp said. "The better we get at that, the more our running game should open up because people will have to start playing the passing game hard."
"You can guarantee we're going to come with our hardest every week," Grey said. "These receivers do a great job catching the ball. I really like the way they run their routes."
Grey had four completions of 10 yards or less and three of more than 50 yards in the first half.
He threw for 18 yards to Antwoine Simon for Danville's first score, then for 7 yards to Will Dunn to put the Admirals in front 12-7 less than 9 minutes into the game. And his 30-yard completion to tight end Cameron Burgess - who earlier caught a 55-yard pass - set up another score on the first play of the second quarter that made it 20-7.
Grey's 15-yard scoring run stretched Danville's lead to 26-14, and he went 4-for-4 on a drive that ended with a 37-yard pass to Jacody Taylor, the Admirals' last scoring drive of the half.
He opened the second half with a 52-yard scoring pass to Duran Elmore, and Danville scored once more early in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard run by Antwoine Simon.
Simon rushed for 62 yards, while Taylor led the Admirals with 81.
He opened the second half with a 52-yard scoring pass to Duran Elmore that made it 38-17, but Russell scored twice in about 2 1/2 minutes to pull within a touchdown early in the fourth quarter.
"Our skill guys and our linemen go both ways, so we got tired," Grey said.
Danville put the game away with a 63-yard scoring drive capped by a 1-yard run by Antwoine Simon.
Simon rushed for 62 yards, while Taylor led the Admirals with 81.
