Letter: McCain not too old or unstable

September 07, 2008

Dear Editor,

In response to Linda Lussier's letter to the editor on Sept. 4, this is the first time I have read of someone questioning McCain's mental stability. He was a prisoner of war for more than five years and has been in the Senate for a very long time. I doubt his mental capacity has been compromised.

His history of cancer was skin cancer. My mother is 93 years old and has had numerous skin cancers and very few are life threatening. Walk down the street and ask how many people have had skin cancer. The answers might shock you. We are a sun-loving nation.

In his favor, he chose a female who can relate to the problems we women face every day. She is not a Washington insider, to her credit. Sarah Palin has done a great job in Alaska. Their previous administration had many problems, and she faced them and solved most. She is proud of her family and proud of her country.

The writer said she did not have enough experience to be in line for the presidency should John McCain not fulfill his term. Obama has less experience than she. Still, he hopes to be the president.

There are many questions about his background and ability to govern. He wants change, but what kind? When he takes 10 million people off the tax rolls, where do you think the money to replace that is coming from? The working man's pocket. Anytime the government gives away anything, we pay for it.

I know a lot of men the age of McCain will be insulted to think they are considered too old to be of any use. A great many men and women in this country have done their greatest work after the age of retirement.

Experience, knowledge and the desire to be a credit to the country is something we learn as we age. Someday you will be this old, and then tell me you are old and useless.
