LEXINGTON - The George Rogers Clark boys' soccer team capped an emotional week with a 1-1 tie against Lexington Christian Saturday.

The Cardinals (3-2-1) played for the first time since the death of fellow student and girls' soccer team member Mckenna Hatchett.

Prior to the contest, the Eagles presented Clark coach Greg Dyk with a print at midfield in honor of Hatchett and held a moment of silence.

Clark honored Hatchett by wearing yellow tape on their socks.

The Knights scored the first goal and held a 1-0 advantage at the break.

Clark scored in the 69th minute when Mason Kirk connected on a goal when he capitalized on a ball misplayed by Christian's goal keeper following a shot by Clark's Rex Catron.

Kirk's goal was the first scored on the Eagles, who had posted shutouts in their first five games to open the season.

"We never quit," Dyk said. "It was a great team effort on the goal. Defensively, we had one breakdown and it cost us. Overall, it was a great team effort with good ball movement."

Clark senior Aaron Haggard agreed.

"The midfield and the defense played great," he said. "We were able to possess the ball and utilize the flanks."

Clark had seven shots on goal and goal keeper Blake Browning scooped up four saves.

In the junior varsity game, Clark came away with a 3-1 win over the Eagles.

Ethan Varner, Ethan Taulbee and Raymond Borja each scored a goal, while Ben Harris recorded five saves.

"We played well," Dyk said. "They worked as a team and the result showed. Despite a very physical game, we kept our composure, played smart and finished well."

Next game: Tuesday, Bourbon County, 7:30 p.m.
