Football: Garrard's Scenters wants district win

September 10, 2008|HAL MORRIS

LANCASTER - Coming off its first win, Garrard County coach Mark Scenters doesn't want his team to "stumble out of the gate" in the Golden Lions' first district game.

That's why he's concerned with his team's execution in Friday's Class AAA, District 5 opener against Jackson County here.

"Overall, execution is always going to be a concern. We can always block and tackle better and execute our assignments better," Scenters said. "The biggest thing that we can accomplish this week is to get off on the right foot with our first district game. Jackson County poses a new set of problems that we need to make sure we manage and attack in the appropriate way."

Jackson (1-1) is coming off a 30-20 win over Betsy Layne. Scenters said the Generals have impressed him.

"They are aggressive on defense and have the ability to make plays offensively as they did in last week's game when they put 30 points on the board," the Garrard coach said.

Garrard beat Bethlehem 45-6 for its first win of the season last week. Scenters wants his team to keep the focus it had last week for a Jackson team in its third year of existence that lost 54-0 last year to the Golden Lions.

Balanced offense

"The biggest thing that we can accomplish this week is to get off on the right foot with our first district game," he said.

And he wants to continue to keep the offense balanced.

Jamarious Merritt has rushed for 164 yards, Jansen Penman 113 yards and Fred Hayes 100 yards and all three have rushed for a touchdown. Tyler Ray has rushed 72 yards and one score and caught seven passes for 99 yards and two more scores to lead the Lions in scoring.

Cash Staley has completed 14 of 24 passes for 142 yards and two touchdowns with one interception.

"We are playing as a team, and that is important for our football team," Scenters said. "Our offensive line, which is going to be a concern all year, has gotten off to a good start and so long as we stay healthy - and continue to get healthy - I think will be a strong point by the end of the year.

"Our line had an outstanding game (against Bethlehem), particularly John Shoemaker and Chris Hendrix. Those guys played well. We blocked better for each other as a team and I think the guys are figuring out that if they block well, they will be rewarded with getting to carry the ball as well. Zach Hounshell did a great job of blocking from the wide receiver spot as well."

Scenters was also impressed with his team's defensive improvement from the first week to the second.

"Defensively we are flying around and making plays. Chris Hendrix, Michael Riley and Tyler Ray are leading the defense, but they all are playing better each week," he said. "We will not be a team of individual standouts, but if things go right, all will have success."
