Volleyball: Lincoln's Frith enjoys playing

September 15, 2008|MIKE MARSEE

STANFORD - Whether it's a backyard game or a big district match, Chasity Frith just loves to play.

She has been part of the Lincoln County volleyball team for only a little more than two years, but she has been playing and enjoying the game for far longer.

"I just have always enjoyed playing, because we played as a family, camping and stuff," Frith said.

Now Frith is playing a bigger role in bigger matches than ever before, though she says it's no big deal.

After a few years of those family games and a couple of years of mostly playing in junior varsity matches, Frith is in her first year as a starting setter.

But she pointed out that many of her teammates are in the same boat. She is one of seven seniors whose roles were limited before this season because the Lady Patriots had five seniors last year.

"We all played JV together," Frith said. "We're all friends, so it's easy to play with each other."

It hasn't been easy lately for the Patriots, however, as they have lost seven of eight matches since losing one of their top net players, Keira Henderson.

Making adjustments

The entire team has made adjustments in the absence of Henderson, who suffered an ankle fracture in a Sept. 2 match. And that includes Frith.

"It's hard. I have to set up people differently than I was used to setting her," Frith said.

But Frith said she believes the Patriots can right the ship and start regularly racking up wins again.

"We've just got to learn to work together better than we are," she said.

Volleyball is Frith's only sport, though she said she may give softball a try next spring before moving on to college to pursue her goal of becoming a teacher.

She is joined on the volleyball squad by younger sister Heather, a sophomore, though that wasn't the case when Heather was a freshman.

"She wouldn't let me play last year," Heather Frith said.

"We didn't always get along," Chasity Frith acknowledged.
