4-H Clover Corner: 4-H specialty clubs and projects up and running

September 17, 2008|KIM RAGLAND

September is the beginning of the Boyle County 4-H program year so all our specialty clubs are beginning this month, along with a couple of projects.

All clubs and projects are free and meet at the Boyle County Extension Office unless otherwise noted.

The Dog Club meets 6-8 p.m. Sept. 23 and 30 and Oct. 7, 14, 21 and 28 in the Livestock Pavilion at the Boyle County Fairgrounds. Youth (ages 9-18 only) learn about dogs and practice obedience training with their pets. Owners must provide proof of vaccination before dogs may participate in obedience classes.

The Craft Club meets 4-5:30 p.m. Sept. 25, Oct. 23, and Dec. 11. Ages 6 to 18 may participate as youth make a variety of crafts from jewelry and ceramics to clothing and holiday gifts. Pre-registration one week prior to the club meeting is required.

The Poultry Club meets at 9 a.m. Oct. 11, Nov. 8 and Dec. 13. Ages 6 to 18 are welcome. The October meeting will include a field trip to a nearby poultry farm that raises all kinds of fowl, including chickens, ducks, geese, guinea hens and pheasants. If you want to learn more about birds, this is the club meeting for you!

The Sewing project group meets 4-5:30 p.m. Sept. 23, Oct. 7 and 21, and Nov. 11. Youth, ages 9-18, will learn to use a sewing machine and make a simple garment or sewn item, such as a duffel bag or skirt. Space is limited, so please call to sign up.

Youth Hunter Education Challenge, part of our 4-H Shooting Sports Club, begins its fall meetings from 6:30-8 p.m. on Nov. 3.

Youth (ages 9-18 only) should make plans to attend this organizational meeting as attendance and participation are important considerations in getting on the YHEC team. YHEC youth learn and practice hunter and firearm safety, wildlife identification, orienteering and general hunting skills.

Archery, another Shooting Sports discipline, will practice from 6-7:30 p.m. Oct. 7 (Curtsinger's) and 21 (Harrodsburg YMCA) and Nov. 4 and 18 (both at Harrodsburg YMCA). Youth, ages 9-18, may participate.

The Horse Club

The Horse Club meets from 7-8 p.m. the first Monday of each month. Youth (ages 9-18 only) do not have to own a horse to participate.

Horse Club members learn how to select, feed and care for horses and have the opportunity to participate in Horse Camp, be part of the Horse Judging or Horse Bowl teams, and participate in the district and state horse shows.

The needlework project still has a few openings for the fall session. Youth ages 9-18 learn to use a sewing machine and make quilted items including a pillowcase, pin cushion and snowman gift bag.

A $20 fee for materials is requested. Call ahead to sign up for the Sept. 30 meeting.

The Livestock Club includes youth with projects in beef and dairy cattle, goats, sheep and swine. Youth ages 6-18 may participate in club meetings from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Oct. 20, Nov. 17 and Dec. 15. Youth do not have to own an animal to participate. All Livestock Club youth are eligible to participate in livestock and meats judging, Livestock Skillathon and the Investment in Youth Sale.

And finally, the Teen Club meets from 4-5 p.m. Oct. 14, Nov. 11 and Dec. 9. Youth ages 13-18 participate in leadership and community service activities, including the ISSUES Conference, Teen Summit in Jabez and the Kentucky 4-H Teen Conference in June at University of Kentucky.
