Letter: Obama has made personal sacrifices

September 23, 2008

Dear Editor,

Barack Obama is one of the best representatives of an American that has come along in years. He has black roots from his father and was raised by a white mother and white grandparents.

His education is impressive, with an outstanding graduation from Harvard Law School. Barack was his class president, the first black man to ever achieve this goal. Barack could have had his choice of high-powered law office positions in New York, but he chose to return to Chicago to continue his work making a difference in the lives of low and middle class Americans. He made this choice to forego the higher paying jobs and made the personal sacrifice financially to help his fellow Americans achieve better living standards. Obama is not one of the "good ole boys" smoking fat cigars, thumbing through their stock portfolios and kissing up to their big business lobbyist friends who have bought and paid for them.

Rather, Barack declined all the perks, favors and bribes so many politicians fall victim to. He chose to remain by the sides of the people in all walks of life. Because the system is so stilted toward the very wealthy with write-offs for yachts, multiple houses, trips and entertainment that your average American is not privy to, Barack feels the top earners have an unfair advantage and is asking that they stand up and pay more in taxes.

Perhaps a simpler way would be to disallow these write-offs used to spare them from paying their fair share in the first place. If these overpaid people paid taxes on their actual income, this country would be far stronger than trying to rely on the poor and middle class to carry the entire load. But the financial loopholes give them huge breaks that allow them to get much farther ahead than the average worker.

Barack recognizes this and is prepared to do something about it. Barack Obama has already made huge sacrifices for the American people, and we need to show our belief in him by voting for him in November.
