Fire damages home on Old Coach Drive

September 24, 2008|Mike Moore

A young child playing with a lighter is thought to be the cause of a Saturday morning fire that damaged a northern Jessamine County home.

Fire crews from four agencies including Jessamine County, Nicholasville, Wilmore and Lexington responded to the fire Saturday at 204 Old Coach Drive in the Crosswoods subdivision and found fire conditions on the second floor.

According to the fire report, the Nicholasville Fire Department was on scene at 10:41 a.m., followed closely by the Wilmore, Jessamine County and Lexington departments.

"They were flowing water in about 10 minutes," Jessamine County Fire Chief Mike Rupard said.

The second floor of the home suffered extensive fire, smoke and water damage.

"The house suffered heavy damage to both bedrooms and bathrooms upstairs," Rupard said. "There was also smoke damage throughout the house."

There were no injuries reported in the blaze.

When the fire was first reported, several members of the Jessamine County Fire District were training on a scheduled controlled house burn on Cobb Lane at the south end of the county, and when the call came in, Rupard called for mutual aid from the other departments.

"As soon as we lit it up (controlled burn) and it (fire) was building up, the tone dropped for a structure fire at 204 Old Coach Drive," Rupard said. "As soon as I heard the call, I gave the order to central dispatch to dispatch out city fire at 10:31."

A fire hydrant near the Old Coach Drive residence wasn't operational because of a vehicle accident earlier in the week, but Rupard said it wasn't an issue.

"The hydrant was hit the Saturday before last, and we didn't know anything about it," he said. "The hydrant was shut off, but all of the other hydrants around there were OK, but we'd put the fire out with less than 1,000 gallons of water."

Jessamine County fire crews stayed on scene until 1:30 p.m.
