Ford Hutchinson of Greenway Drive holds a giant sweet potato weighing 5.5 pounds and measuring 15.5 inches long that he raised in his garden this year. Hutchinson grew several hills of giant sweet potatoes by covering the hills with black plastic when they were planted. In comparison, the sweet potatoes he holds in his left hand were of the same variety as the giant potato, except the hill wasn't covered with plastic. The black plastic held in moisture, providing all the water the potatoes needed to grow to an extra large size. He had 11 huge sweet potatoes from one plant. Hutchinson has been raising a garden
ince 1970.
