Prep Football: Injured Mercer going 'bear hunting'

September 24, 2008|HAL MORRIS

Mercer County will be short-handed when the Titans head out of state Friday to take on Greeneville, Tenn.

The Titans' running game, which had 374 yards last week and is averaging 274 yards a game could without three starting interior linemen - Hunter Robinson, Jay Linton and Devin Majors - as well as tight end Brett Cecil. Safety Andrew Cornish is also listed as doubtful by coach Marty Jaggers.

"We're hurting. Next week we've got an off week, and we need it," Jaggers said. "Southwestern did so much cutting (blocking) last week. They cut us all night long."

Jaggers said the Titans (3-1) will miss those starters against 2-2 Greeneville.

"You go rabbit hunting with a .22 and you can kill a rabbit. You can't go bear hunting with a .22 and kill a bear. We're going bear hunting this week," he said.

Mercer beat Greeneville 14-9 last season and finished the year 10-3. Greeneville is coming off a 41-19 win over Cocke County.

But Greeneville will be without leading rusher Jeremy Barner, who suffered a season-ending foot injury earlier this year. Trevon Hall is Barner's backup.

"They have the same quarterback (Jordan ) and three of their five offensive linemen are the same," he said. "They're a very good team."

Jordan Yeast has rushed for 525 yards and six touchdowns and Matthew McCloud has 289 yards and four scores for the Titans.

But they'll have backups blocking for them this week.

Playing the freshman

"We told them yesterday, 'You guys that haven't gotten to play a lot are getting your opportunity this week,'" he said. "We've got a couple of freshmen we're going to move up to back up some kids. We're just not real deep. We're going to take three freshmen linemen with us, and hopefully we'll stay healthy."

"I told them this a pride game, Kentucky high school football versus Tennessee high school football. Last year we won, and I'm sure they'll remember that. So we're just going to do the best we can."

Jackson County (1-3) at Casey County (0-4) - After struggling with is offense in its first two games, Casey has scored 21 and 23 points in its last two outings.

"We are improving in certain aspects of the game. We need to continue to work each week to try to get better," coach Andy Stephens said. "We have to work hard this week and get better at special teams. We've got to focus on taking care of the football. We had way to many turnovers last week (in a loss to Taylor County)."

Jackson has given up 127 points in its last two games.

"I feel like we match up decent with them," he said. "They have good size up front and do a good job running the football. We have to do a good job up front to give us a shot in this one."

Omar Gonzales has 241 yards rushing with a score for Casey. Will Hatter has thrown for has thrown for 195 yards and Tyler Hayes has thrown for 149 yards.

Stephens said his team just wants to put one in the win column.

"Right now we need a win. A district win is great, but we need a win to help with our confidence," Stephen said.
