Letter: Bigotry alive and well

September 28, 2008

Dear Editor,

Bigotry is alive and well not just at ball games, but in everyday life. Bigotry is not going anywhere anytime soon. It is an awful characteristic of today's society that people may or may not want to admit that they see or hear, but yes, it is prevalent everywhere you turn.

In regards to Ms. Elmore's letter to the editor on Sept. 18, I personally didn't see any shirts stating "100% cotton" on them, but I am not going to be naive enough to say that people didn't have them on. I personally didn't see anyone throwing cotton at the Boyle County-Danville game last year, but I am not going to say it didn't happen.

I will say that I hope she doesn't let a few bad apples spoil the whole bunch. My son is a freshman at Boyle County High School and has been a student in the Boyle County system since kindergarten. We have never experienced any racial incidents while he has been a student in the Boyle County system. Our family has had the opportunity to get to know many families in the Boyle County system and we consider quite a few of them as friends. I apologize if anyone did encounter these incidents, and I hope they never have to encounter them again.

I will say that I think bigotry is alive and well in Danville school system every bit as much as it is at Boyle County. I hope Ms. Elmore and her son never have to encounter situations that I know some kids in the Danville system have encountered, and if she does, I hope she isn't afraid to point a finger at them the same way she pointed it at Boyle County.
