Wes Martin hugged his nephew Michael Martin after he completed his round during the boys 9th Region Tournament Tuesday at the University Club of Kentucky.

Martin finished the round with a 76 and was edged out in a two-hole playoff by Henry Clay's Preston French for the last of three individual slots allocated for the state tournament.

Prior to the playoff, Martin fired an even-par 36 on the front nine and had a 40 on the back for a 4-over-par performance.

Martin said his play on the greens were beneficial during the entire round.

"I putted really good," he said. "That was the main thing."

Martin said the course "was pretty tough," but didn't let the conditions hinder his performance.

"I just focused on my putting a lot," he said.

As a team, Clark finished with a 344, 40 shots behind winner Dunbar, which defeated Lexington Christian in a one-hole playoff to capture the team title. Both teams will advance to the state tournament next week in Bowling Green.

"Michael played outstanding and I couldn't be more prouder of him," said Wes Martin, the team's coach. "The rest of them struggled. It's a real hard course - one of the toughest courses we've played on all year."

Brad Martin followed Michael Martin with an 85. He had a 43 on the first nine holes, followed by a 42 on the back nine. Brad Martin had "two water balls" on No. 7 and triple bogeyed the ninth hole.

"I got of to a good start, but it went downhill," he said.

D.J. Pegg overcame a slow start and finished with a 91. Pegg was 6-over after the first four holes, but recovered and had a 43 on the last nine holes.

"The first four holes hurt me," Pegg said. "I hit the ball better on the back nine."

Clark seniors Austin Wingate and Taylor Graham closed out their prep careers with a 92 and 99, respectively.

Wingate had a 44 on the front and carded a 48 on the last nine holes.

"I didn't play bad on the front, but I just kept bogeying every hole," he said. "I couldn't find a par. That's the way it goes sometimes. You play good and sometimes you play bad."

Graham scored below 100 despite a 10 on No. 7 and another 10 No. 12, a Par 3 hole surrounded by water and other hazards.

"I went into the water three times on the Par 3," he said. "But, I played well on the other holes."

Wes Martin said he liked the way his team competed throughout the season.

"We had a good group," he said. "It's good (for the younger players) to learn, get some experience and do better next year."
