Lady Eagle eighth-graders take 12th Region title

The eighth-grade Lincoln County Lady Eagles preserved their unblemished middle school record with a championship finish in the 12th Region Middle School Tournament at Rocky Hollow in Somerset.

The Lady Eagles, who finish 22-0 for the season and 65-0 over the past three years, cake-walked their way to the regional title, outscoring their four opponents 169-83, including two 27-point victories. The closest game came in the semifinals as Lincoln defeated Meece Middle 37-28.

The members of the eighth-grade Lady Eagle team are: Kourtney Belcher, Kelly Coleman, Lindsey Gifford, Sydney Harris, Spencer Sims, Ciara Saylor, Vanessa Conley, Hannah Harris, Rachel Spangler, Emily Fox, Kelsi Honaker, Heidi Huffman and Chansler Gilbert. The Lincoln head coach is Billy Harris and he is assisted by Julie Lair and Rebecca May.

The Lady Eagle sixth-grade and seventh-grade teams also competed in the regional tournament. Lincoln's sixth-graders finished as runners-up in the tourney while the seventh-graders bowed out in the semifinal round.

Championship Game

Lincoln 46

Northern Pulaski 23

Consistent double-digit scoring through three quarters of play propelled Lincoln to a 46-23 win in the final of the eighth-grade 12th Region Tournament at Rocky Hollow in Somerset.

Lincoln doubled up on Northern in the first quarter, 12-6, and took a 17-12 lead into the half.

The Lady Eagles used a 15-4 third quarter to cushion their lead to 32-16 then sealed the title win with a 14-7 finish.

Emily Fox paced Lincoln in the 46-23 win with 13 points. Chansler Gilbert chipped in with seven points, Lindsey Gifford and Hannah Harris had five points each, Kourtney Belcher and Rachel Spangler each had four points, Sydney Harris and Heidi Huffman each had three, and Ciara Saylor added two points.

Semifinals

Lincoln 37

Meece 28

Lincoln County Middle School had to overcome an early deficit to advance to the championship game of the 12th Region Middle School Tournament.

After falling behind in the first quarter, Lincoln rebounded to outscore Meece 29-16 and earn a 37-28 win in the semifinal round.

Meece put up double digits in the first quarter, putting up 12 points to take a 12-8 lead over the Lady Eagles. However, by the end of the first half, Lincoln held the advantage, outpointing Meece 9-6 to go up 17-16.

The Lady Eagles showed a four-point, 26-22, lead at the end of the third period then secured the win with an 11-6 showing in the fourth.

Emily Fox tallied a game-high 19 points to lead Lincoln to the win. Sydney Harris added six points, Hannah Harris, five points, Rachel Spangler, three points, and Lindsey Gifford and Ciara Saylor had two points each.

Quarterfinals

Lincoln 40

East Jessamine 13

Lincoln County cruised through the quarterfinals of the 12th Region Middle School Tournament, steamrolling East Jessamine 40-13.

Lincoln exploded to a 17-4 first quarter lead and East Jessamine never challenged. Lincoln led 20-5 at the half and outscored East Jessamine 20-8 in the second half to put the game away.

Emily Fox was Lincoln's leading scorer, finishing with 13 points, while Sydney Harris scored nine points. Chansler Gilbert and Hannah Harris scored four points apiece, Ciara Saylor had three points, Lindsey Gifford, Kourtney Belcher and Vanessa Conley each had two points and Rachel Spangler added a free throw toss.

First Round

Lincoln 46

Monticello 19

Lincoln's eighth-graders took control of their first-round 12th Region Tournament game early and never looked back, routing Monticello 46-19.

Lincoln opened up a 16-3 lead on Monticello in the first and used an 11-5 second quarter to post a 27-8 halftime advantage.

The Lady Eagle offense soared in the third quarter, tallying 17 points to go up 44-12 before moving on for the win.

Lincoln's scoring was led by Emily Fox's 14 points. Ciara Saylor added eight points for the Lady Eagles, Sydney Harris scored six points, Rachel Spangler had five points, Kourtney Belcher finished with four points, Lindsey Gifford had three points and Chansler Gilbert, Vanessa Conley and Hannah Harris each had two points.

Semifinals

Southern Middle 35

Lincoln 28

Southern Middle School ended Lincoln's hopes for a 12th Region crown by disposing of the Lady Eagles 35-28 in the semifinal round.

It was a close game between the region foes, with Southern nosing ahead of Lincoln 6-5 in the first quarter and clinging to a 16-14 lead at the half.

Southern provided itself a little cushion in the third quarter, outscoring Lincoln 9-4 to take a 25-18 lead.

Seven points would be the final margin, with both teams finishing play with 10-point fourth-quarter efforts as Southern advanced to the final.

Rachel Spangler and Shelby Walls shared scoring honors for Lincoln in the loss with seven points each. Kendra Mullins and Jerrica Kidd each had four points, and Cassie Smith, Brittany Simpson and Spencer Sims had two points apiece.
