Lincoln junction ordinance requires sewer hook-ups where septic failing

October 29, 2008|TODD KLEFFMAN

STANFORD - Lincoln Fiscal Court took the first step Tuesday to correct a "verbiage" error in an ordinance requiring residents with failing septic systems to hook up to sewer lines where available.

Judge-Executive Buckwheat Gilbert said when the county adopted the ordinance about eight years ago, the language mistakenly required only that residents of the Roland community get on the sewer.

On Tuesday, magistrates approved the first-reading to change the ordinance so it would require all Lincoln County residents with failing septic systems to hook up to the sewer line where it is available.

The change is needed in advance of the proposed installation of sewer service along Airport Road where it extends into Lincoln County from Junction City, Gilbert said.

That sewer line is part of a larger expansion project the city of Danville is working on in Junction City.

Engineering work has already been completed on the part of the project in Lincoln County and it is awaiting grant approval for funding, which Gilbert said is expected to come next year.

The ordinance originally was adopted when sewer lines were run to accommodate the then-new industrial park on a hill above Roland. About 40 of the 45 homes in the community had septic systems that didn't work properly, Gilbert said, but all have attached to the line now.

"I don't know why anyone would keep having septic when they could get on sewer," Gilbert said.
