Two seek Casey school board seat

October 30, 2008

LIBERTY - Dinah Burton, chairman of the Casey County Board of Education, decided not to run for re-election this year and two first-time candidates are seeking to fill her shoes.

Retired teacher Marilyn Coffey and construction worker Stacie Wilkerson are running to represent District 5, which covers eastern and southern portions of the county, including the Phelps School, Bethelridge and Argyle communities.

Coffey, 61, worked 28 years in education, including stints as a kindergarten teacher and coordinator of the school system's Family Resource Center. She also held state and local positions working with students with special needs, she said.

"We've never had a retired teacher on the school board here. I want to be the first one," said Coffey, who has a granddaughter who attends Casey Middle School. "I think it gives you an entirely different perspective being in the classroom."

If elected, Coffey said she will work to showcase excellence achieved by students and staff and make sure that parents and the community are engaged in helping students succeed.

Wilkerson, 39, did not return phone calls seeking comment.

According to the Casey County News, Wilkerson has two children in elementary school and has served on the school councils at Walnut Hill Elementary and the old Phelps Elementary.

"I just feel like I'm going to have children in school and I may take more interest than somebody who doesn't have a child in the school system," he told the local newspaper.

Wilkerson said he wants to see teachers evaluated each year before they are rehired and would promote programs that provide extra help and supplies to students from low-income households.

Soil Conservation District

Voters countywide also can vote for four of six candidates in the non-partisan race to serve on the Soil Conservation District.

They are: Harvey Luttrell, 58, 607 Lee Road, Dunnville; James Michael Carmicle, 62, 2083 Woodrum Ridge Road; Mary Shoopman, 64, 2665 Reynolds Creek Road; David Grider, 62, 1601 Bryant Ridge Road; Brent Ware, 40, 5314 N. Ky. 837; and Curtis "Skipper" Todd, 1985 Fishing Creek Road.
