The 4Bs travel to Stanton

October 30, 2008

The 4Bs Senior Adults, First Baptist Church, 32 East Lexington Ave., boarded the church bus Thursday, Oct. 2, bound for Stanton, county seat of Powell County and Natural Bridge State Resort Park, also in Powell County.

Powell County was formed in 1852. It is located in the Eastern Coalfield region of the state and offers unique experiences for its visitors. The group lunched at Hood's Pizza & More, 130 Washington St., in Stanton; the diverse menu provided something for everyone.

After a leisurely time of food and fellowship, everyone was ready for the beautiful drive to the park. Located in the midst of the Daniel Boone National Forest, near the Red River Gorge Geological Area, the 2,200 acre Natural Bridge State Resort Park is home to the great natural sandstone arch, which is 65 feet tall and 78 feet long. This arch stands like a sentinel welcoming visitors to the park's kaleidoscope of spectacular seasonal beauties.

As the seniors wended their way home, they took time to visit and delight in their mission church in the small community of Nada. This church was founded years ago by the membership of First Baptist Church, Winchester, as a place of worship for the community. It has grown steadily over the years with support from the community, Cooperative Baptist Fellowship and many mission groups from many states.

A few miles from the little church, though not visited this day, one approaches the 900-foot Nada Tunnel. Without high tech modern equipment, Nada Tunnel was hand carved to make a road for the logging trucks back in the early 1900s. It is on the National Register of Historic Places because of its unique nature.

Those attending the outing were: Bonnie Biggerstaff, Elizabeth Bunch, Marie Cook, Jim Davis, driver, Joyce Ecton, Agnes Estes, Hallie McCloud, Louise Pittman, Elizabeth Prather, Bonnie Riggs, Charlotte Schnittker and Ava Tyler. The 4Bs' monthly trips include fellowship, lunch, service and sight-seeing.

The attendees brought chicken noodle soup and dish detergent for the Clark County Community Service Center.

Dr. John E. Owen is the pastor of the church and the Nada Mission. Paula Settle and Emilee Causey are missionaries serving at Nada and Bill Christian, Juanita Christian and Bill Shelton are volunteer staff teaching Sunday school and offering musical support.

Elizabeth Prather, Ava Tyler, Elizabeth Bunch, Joyce Ecton, Agnes Estes, Mary Elizabeth Johnson and Hallie McCloud serve on the planning committee.
