Letter: Vote change: Griffin and 'Yes'

October 30, 2008

Dear Editor,

It certainly appears that some changes must be made within the Danville city government. Recent debacles include:

1. The Commission rehired the former city engineer, which may be a violation of the Danville Code of Ethics Section 2-274 "Post-employment restriction" that states an employee cannot be rehired within one year of termination. It will be interesting to see if the 3-2 voting block that brought ethics charges against Mayor Coomer and voted to relieve the engineer will ask for an ethics board ruling in this matter. Has the employment contract been signed yet?

2. Mayor Coomer voted against the demotion of the chief financial officer and for an independent auditor to come in and review the books. The majority of the commissioners voted otherwise. Now, the city is being sued. Mayor Coomer will have to go to court and tell a jury the truth about why he refused to demote the CFO. It should be an interesting case to watch. At one debate, a commissioner said that the city manager did what he felt was necessary regarding the CFO. If Danville had a strong mayor the mayor may have been able to veto the demotion and thwart a lawsuit.

3. The city is paying almost $100,000 to consultants before the first Port-a-Potty is delivered, to tell us that the city should be able to financially afford the renovations of city hall. Yet, many people believe that the economy is in bad shape.

The first step to make changes at city hall would be to elect some new faces to the commission. Bob Griffin has extensive business experience and can handle any situation. Mr. James Cline seems to be informed. Keep Ms. Louis because her votes would have avoided debacles mentioned earlier - and more.

After reading the "Voice of the People" column, it appears as though change is not forthcoming. The only hope for the city may be for the people to vote 'Yes' for the mayor/council form of government. The public should think "Change" before they vote.
