Marine Corps League 'Koatz for Kids' begins

October 31, 2008

Some kids have no problem getting a winter coat. For others, it's an issue, and one organization is doing something about it.

The local Marine Corps League, Detachment 1012, is conducting its annual "Koatz for Kids" drive in an effort to supply coats for needy children in Madison County and the surrounding areas.

The league has drop-off at both Wal-Mart locations in Richmond and Berea and also at the Kroger location in Richmond. The league will be accepting coats at those three locations through Nov. 26.

The coats will be distributed Nov. 3-26 at the Richmond Mall.

This year marks the 10th time the league has accepted and donated coats to less-fortunate children in Madison County. Personal Touch Dry Cleaners is in charge of cleaning the coats before distribution and is donating their time and effort.

William Taylor, a member of the local detachment, and Dennis Rice serve as co-chairmen.

Taylor and Rice said it's a good opportunity for local residents to give back and help children in the community.

"We have a lot of coats this year and it's a good opportunity to provide a warm coat to the needy children in Madison and surrounding counties," Taylor said. "It's one of several projects we do to benefit the community. We like to see children be happy and not worry about them getting cold during the winter."

Taylor has been in charge of the project for the past three years and said the venture is rewarding to all members of the local detachment.

"It's good to be able to provide children with a warm coat, especially with the economic downturn in our economy and the rise in gasoline costs and other services," he said. "In the past, it has been a warm feeling to see those who are less fortunate come to our location in the Richmond Mall and pick out a coat to wear when winter finally arrives."
