Husband charged with wanton endangerment

A possible standoff on Iron Works Road ended peacefully Tuesday evening when the suspect surrendered.

Police arrested 46-year-old Kenneth R. Armstrong after forcing their way into his home at 6451 Iron Works Road Tuesday evening. Armstrong had allegedly threatened his wife and fired two shots into the air. This morning, he remains in the Clark County Detention Center facing two counts of second-degree wanton endangerment.

"He was in the bed with a .38 (handgun) under the pillow," Clark County Sheriff Berl Perdue Jr. said.

A neighbor called police shortly before 4 p.m. after talking with Armstrong's wife, Perdue said. When officers arrived, Armstrong refused to answer his phone and did not respond to commands over a vehicle's public address system, he said.

"We received a call that he was at a residence on Iron Works Road, had a gun and had made threats against his wife," Perdue said. "Following the altercation, he went outside and fired two shots."

For a time, police didn't know if Armstrong was in the house or not. About 10 deputies gathered in the driveway, some dressed in camouflage and wearing bulletproof vests, before going up the road to Armstrong's trailer.

"We made entry into the trailer before it got dark," Perdue said. "If he wasn't in there, we didn't want to be in the dark with the woods behind us."

Armstrong, though, surrendered without incident or threat. Perdue said the man had been drinking, but was not intoxicated to the point of passing out.

Deputies cleared the scene at approximately 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
