Funding needed for Danville Fire Department toy drive

November 14, 2008

The fundraising drive for Danville Fire Department's Christmas Toy Program is under way, but signs are pointing to a much tighter Christmas for the area's neediest families.

Firefighters are reporting that monetary donations to the toy drive are significantly lower than this time last year, with available funds at about two-thirds of what was available in 2007.

Firefighters will try to fill toy requests during the first week in December within the limits of available funding.

The department expected to provide gifts to about 250 children during the 2007 drive and instead managed to assist just over 300 in the Boyle County area.

This was accomplished with significant help from Perryville Fire Department and other organizations.

The fire department expects to handle a similar caseload this year, but the economy likely will create an additional demand for assistance.

The fire department remains optimistic that the community will pitch in to help the program once more.

"In 25 years, this community hasn't let us down yet," said Fire Chief Mike Thomas.

He noted the success of last year's drive in spite of donated toys and funds dropping off from the previous year.

The department is working with other groups in the Boyle County area to raise additional funds in time for the Christmas season.

To donate, people can contact Danville Fire Department at (859) 238-1211.

The department is accepting only new toys for redistribution. Thomas notes that some used toys are missing essential parts and cannot be made into acceptable gifts.

Monetary contributions can be taken to central fire station on Main Street or mailed in care of Christmas Toy Drive 2008 at P.O. Box 670, Danville, KY 40423-0670. Checks should be made out to the Christmas Toy Drive.
