Restaurant break-ins investigated

November 20, 2008|Fred Petke

Police are investigating whether a pair of early morning restaurant robberies are connected to others in the region.

Around 3 a.m. Wednesday, both Giovanni's and Burger King were targeted by would-be burglars who attempted to enter through the buildings' drive-through windows, Winchester Police Capt. Harvey Craycraft said.

They got into Burger King, but didn't make it inside Giovanni's, he said. In either case, nothing was taken.

"They broke in through (Burger King's) drive-through window and were trying to make entry to the safe," Craycraft said. The safe was damaged, but was not opened, he said.

"They didn't complete the job," Craycraft said.

The burglars didn't get that far at Giovanni's, possibly because the alarm scared them off, said Craycraft. Officers responded to an alarm sounding at that restaurant around 3 a.m. Burger King employees noticed the damage later in the morning as they prepared to open for the day, he said.

Craycraft said he would follow up with neighboring counties to see if similar burglaries have occurred.

"It could be people from Lexington or a crew moving around," he said.

Anyone with information should call the Winchester Police Department at 745-7400.
