Bird count in Boyle needs volunteers

December 01, 2008

The 109th annual National Audubon Society bird count will be held in the Danville area Dec. 20, between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. This will be the 60th consecutive year that Danville has participated.

Group captains from last year should have already contacted their team members to find out if they can participate this year. Anyone who did not take part last year and would like to take part in this year's count may call Neil or Ginny Eklund at (859) 236-8807 or e-mail nveklund@roadrunner.com.

Membership in the Audubon Society is not required, but a participation fee of $5 is required of all participants older than 18. The fee helps defray the costs of compilation and publication of the international data. The international count includes provinces of Canada and some islands of the Caribbean.

Last year, the 31 participants tallied 4,958 birds representing 56 species. The highlight of last year's count were the 138 wild turkeys sighted; this was the highest count of turkeys ever made in the Danville region for the Christmas bird count.

The region consists of the interior of a circle extending 7.5 miles from the Boyle County Courthouse.
