Fire destroys Stanford house

December 02, 2008

STANFORD - A fire Monday on Main Street in Stanford badly damaged a family's home, destroyed Christmas presents and killed two pets.

The fire apparently started in the living room of the two-story, single-family dwelling, said Fire Chief Kenneth McDaniel. Every room in the house was either damaged by fire or heavy smoke, and McDaniel isn't sure if the building will be salvageable.

No one was injured in the blaze.

McDaniel said Stanford firefighters responded to the residence of Scott and Sheila Broughton at 325 W. Main St. about 5:30 p.m. and discovered the living room and kitchen in flames.

Though crews were on the scene for several hours, it took only 10 minutes for firefighters to control and extinguish the blaze.

Two engines from the department worked the fire, along with one engine from Lincoln County Fire Department Station 1.

McDaniel said the family was home at the time of the fire, but managed to escape unharmed. The family includes a teenage daughter and two small grandchildren, said neighbor Veronica Yocom. The family is staying with relatives.

A family dog made it out of the burning house unharmed, but two pet cats did not.

Everything in the house was lost, including Christmas presents. McDaniel planned to spend time today finding organizations around town to help provide the family with something in terms of gifts for the holidays.

Investigation into the cause of the fire continues, but McDaniel said no factors point to arson or foul play.
