Saint Joseph names new CMO

Daniel W. Varga, M.D. has been named the new Chief Medical Officer for Saint Joseph Health System, the multi-hospital system that includes Saint Joseph Hospital and Saint Joseph East (Lexington), Flaget Memorial Hospital (Bardstown), Saint Joseph Berea, Saint Joseph Jessamine, Saint Joseph London, Saint Joseph Martin and Saint Joseph Mount Sterling.

"With our history of national recognition for outstanding care, we are confident that Dr. Varga will play a key role in the quality integration of all our facilities, as well as develop initiatives that will maintain our position as the leader of health care delivery in the state."

Most recently, Varga was the regional vice president and chief medical officer for SSM Healthcare in Saint Louis, Mo. SSM Healthcare-Saint Louis is a seven-hospital system and the recipient of the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award in 2002. As CMO for SSM Healthcare, Varga was responsible for network-wide strategy in areas of clinical quality, patient safety, clinical resource management and medical staff affairs. Varga also developed the public quality report for the network that consists of various quality measures and safety reports.

Previously, he was the senior vice president and chief medical officer for Norton Healthcare from 2001-2006.

There, Varga served as leader of clinical quality functions for the system, which included care management, service line development and operations, accreditation and regulatory activities, clinical operations improvement, clinical information system integration and clinical decision support development. He also developed the Norton Healthcare Quality Report, which is a nationally recognized, web-based public reporting initiative that started in 2005. Varga also served as president of the Greater Louisville Medical Society and the Kentucky Medical Association and led the KMA Physician Workforce Committee.

From 1994-2001, Varga was the founder, president and medical director for Community Medical Associates in Louisville, a multi-specialty primary care group. He was also in private practice in internal medicine from 1987-1994.

Varga holds a bachelor of science from the University of Kentucky and a doctorate of medicine from the University of Louisville School of Medicine.

Varga will officially join Saint Joseph Health System in early December.
