Krazy Boyz win for best parade float

The KY Krazy Boyz motorcycle club took home the top prize Saturday for having the best float at the annual Winchester Christmas Parade.

The Grinch-themed float was made of recyclable materials, keeping with the parade's "green" theme. The event encouraged Winchester residents to protect the planet with recycling-themed floats and eco-friendly golf carts.

Kinetic Vehicles LLC, formerly Buggies Unlimited, and owner Bart Mahan sponsored this year's parade, including prize money of $250 each for best float, golf cart and performing group.

"It went really well," said Lara Thornbury, director of Winchester First. "I just think it (golf carts) adds something different to the parade."

Paul Richardson won the award for best golf cart. Studio One clogging was named best performing group.

"I think, overall, it was a huge success," Thornbury said.

The parade's grand marshal was Sgt. John Kirby, a soldier wounded twice in Iraq who is now stationed in San Antonio, Texas, recovering from his injury at the Brooke Army Medical Center.

"The fact that he came all the way in was wonderful," she said. "I think it's so important to honor our soldiers. Everyone who was there that night was clapping and cheering for him."

This year's parade was the first for two other events - an auction to benefit charity and a performance by the Winchester Chorale.

The O' Christmas Tree auction of wooden tree sculptures earned $1,460 for Operation Happiness.

"For our very first year, I thought it was great," Thornbury said. "It was so fun."

Students at the Clark County Area Technology Center built the trees from donated supplies, and downtown business owners decorated them. Auctioneers sold 22 trees, and more than 100 people showed up for the fast-paced sale, Thornbury said.
